Common Cleanse Reactions:

Some people will experience some type of cleansing reaction as the processed foods and 80,000 different environmental toxins are purged from our fat stores.

As fat is incinerated your body will have to process those toxins out using your elimination systems. Understanding common reactions and solutions will make any transition you experience a minor inconvenience at the most, and help you ensure success with your superfood cleanse .

Sick Day: 

For some people cleansing can cause mild flu-like symptoms. This can include having low energy, mild headaches, feeling light-headed and weak, and so on. Typically these reactions are short lived, likely just a few hours, as the toxins are processed and eliminated from the body.  

This is why we suggest starting your superfood cleanse on your Friday as the first 3 days are typically the most challenging in this regard.

Cravings: 

As toxins release they can cause some people to feel moderate to intense cravings for comfort-type processed foods.   If this happens, I highly recommend eating a tablespoon of coconut butter.  It calms the cravings.  Add a little cinnamon and stevia for a little  coconut ball treat!

Irritability: 

When toxins release into the body it can cause some people to have a shift in their attitude. Most of the time this manifests as mild irritation to things that normally would not bother someone.  This should resolve in a short period of time... Take a few deep breaths and focus on something fun.

Feeling Nausea When You Drink the Power Shake:

Although this can happen it is uncommon. This can be the result of too many toxins prior to starting the program, allergies, or a common effect of coming off of a bad diet.

Superfood Cleanse Solutions:

Hydration:  

As you learned on Day 1, hydration is the single most important aspect of this transformational superfood cleanse.  

When in doubt, Drink More Water as this can relieve or eliminate cleansing reactions virtually 100% of the time.

A little cup of green tea can also help, especially with headaches.  I don't recommend drinking it throughout the day, as you are supposed to be eliminating caffeine altogether.  A cup or half of a cup early in the day should be fine for reducing detox reactions.

Prone To Constipation?

If so, you may want to Take the Digestive Screening Test to see if there may be an underlying issue that is getting in your way.

You can also try one of these for relief:

  • Add Blueberries to Your Smoothies ~ Somehow this works! Just keeping adding them 1/4-1/2 cup at a time until you begin to move.  
  • Salt-Cherry Flush ~ Wake up 1 hour early to allow time to complete the flush. 

Mix 1 qt. of warm water with 2 tsp of Himalayan sea salt (or other non-iodized natural salt).  In a separate glass, mix 4 tbsp. of Apothe-Cherry with 12 oz. cold water.  Drink the salt water.  Immediately lie down on your left side for 20 minutes, keeping Apothe-Cherry drink in reach.  After 20 mins, drink the Apothe-Cherry.  Resume lying on left side for 20 additional minutes.  Sit on toilet with feet elevated several inches off the ground. You can use a couple of thick books, small stool, or trashcan.  You should “empty out” in a few minutes.

Reminder: DO NOT pass gas unless sitting on the toilet. Results may vary on the initial salt cherry flush. Try again the next day if you are not successful the first time.  Do this only every other day if you are not flushing regularly.

  • Stomach Pump Exercise:  

Recommended by Staff Naturopath Michael Wohlfeld

Stand up straight then bend straight over and rest hands on thighs.  Take a few deep breaths, and then exhale all air.  Now pull in the stomach and try to have it touch the diaphragm.  Now push back all the way out and repeat this 2-10 times or as many as you can without taking a breath.  Repeat this exercise 5-10 times and this really massages the intestines increasing mobility.

Rest:  

Ok, Ladies, I can't say enough about this, if you feel tired… rest.  

It sounds so simple but we are so used to always always doing, doing, doing.  It is possible you will feel tired, and this is a time to start learning to listen to your body in a deeper way.  

Following your body's guidance is important to your wellbeing.  Taking a little break when your body asks for it will allow your symptoms to pass much quicker, and it is good practice to love yourself that much.

Flex Foods: 

At some point you may feel like you need to eat something other than a superfood to get your blood sugar up.  This is when you should eat one of your flex foods.  Remember, if you need to eat more than the allowed number of flex foods, do it.  Far better to do that than quit, no doubt about it.
