This is always the big question on everyone's mind:

There is a lot to say about this subject, and take it from me, someone who has studied this subject for over 20 years, and was one of those people who didn't want organic food benefits to be true. I mean, gosh... Organic Is So Expensive!!

Here Is What I Do Know:  It Really Does Matter.

That being said, let me clarify ~

There are 2 things that are important when choosing the foods you eat:

1.   You Are Getting the Highest-Quality, Most Absorbable Nutrients Possible.

2.  You Are Avoiding As Many Toxins As Possible.

Obviously, getting the highest-quality, most absorbable nutrients into your diet is important since they are what help the bod heal and keep you feeling vibrant and healthy. 

Avoiding as many toxins as possible is important because said toxins wreak havoc on your body and mind.  If you have been eating a toxic diet, or live in a toxic environment (don't we all?) then it is likely that your digestive system, hormonal system, thyroid, and other organs and glands are not functioning as well as they could.

We live in a more toxic world than ever before and, truth is, our bodies are not developed enough to handle the stress very well.

100% natural

You should know that "natural" and "organic" are not interchangeable terms.  There is no formal definition for the term "natural" when used on a food label.  So, you can rest assured that "natural" does NOT mean "organic". Organic food benefits only come from organic foods.  Only foods that are processed according to the USDA organic standards can be labeled organic. 

However, your local farmer may not be using any pesticides, herbicides or fungicides, which technically means those foods are organic, but cannot be labeled as such unless the farmer is certified.

An organic label does not mean that the food has never had any chemicals on it.  As a matter of fact, in most states, organic farmers are allowed to use many different sprays and chemicals on their crops, although these chemicals must be derived from natural sources. However, about 50% of the naturally-derived chemicals that are used on organic farms have been found to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing), and yet, there still are less toxins on organic foods.  

We also know that some produce is sprayed more than other produce...

So, if you understand which foods are most likely to have the highest concentration of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides then you can choose your foods in a wiser way.

As far as nutrient density being any better with organic food benefits, well, there is a lot of controversy on this subject.  My first recommendation is to do a self-study and see what you think for your own body.  For me, and all of my patients who have done this study, eating organic makes us feel full longer, which tend to tell me that my body is absorbing more from these foods.  Even if the actual food does not have more nutrients, the lack of toxins may be allowing my body to get more out of the food.

It is also important to realize that to live your healthiest life, you want to be conscious about the choices you are making around food, especially when it comes to packaged and processed food.  Although I highly recommend eating a diet of whole foods and vegetables, there is no way I expect anyone to never eat a packaged food again.  What I do expect is that people begin to make conscious choices when eating these packaged products.  

Organic food benefits really is more than making sure your label says "organic"; what matters is that each hard-earned dollar you spend is going to ethical companies and NOT to companies that spend your money lobbying for looser organic standards.

You actually have several options when it comes to buying your food.  Most of us are used to going to the grocery store and filling up our shopping carts with a little bit of everything, but have you tried exploring your local Farmer's Market?

If you can, Buy your produce from a Farmer's Market and ask each farmer if they grow chemical-free crops.

You will find many of them do, and do not call their foods "organic", yet you still get organic food benefits.  To get "Organic Certified" it costs a lot of money, and the standards do not uphold the greatest impact on our environment and health.  I enjoy supporting my local farmer.  Many of the farmers at our market will also let you tour their farm, so you can get a first hand look at how they run operations.  This says a whole lot about the integrity of the farm and farmer.

It may be that you do not have access to a Farmer's Market due to weather or distance. If this is true for you, go ahead and buy organic when you can, as it is still a better alternative to conventional. Conventional foods do not give you the organic food benefits.

The last thing I'd like to share with you is how you can be sure of the quality of food you are buying for your family and that you are getting organic food benefits:

I bet you have noticed that little sticker on your apples and bananas.  Did you notice that it has a number on it?  That number means more than just a bar code for the staff to scan your foods.  Each number on a piece of produce is either 4 or 5 digits long.  If it is a 5 digit number, and begins with an 8, this indicates the food is genetically modified.  If it begins with a "9", it is Organic.  If there are only 4 digits on the sticker, you are buying conventional.
