We are starting with Smoothie Bases, as Smoothie Bases are great to have on hand throughout the week so that your Smoothie Making Magic is easy breezy.  Having a smoothie base on hand means that you don't have to blend up a bunch of stuff every day, rather pour, shake and go.

There are a few variations that I stick with:

1. Veggie Bases

2. Almond Milk Base

3. Coconut Milk Base

Veggie Bases

Veggie bases for your healthy smoothies can be made a few different ways.  First, decide if you need extra carbohydrates for more intense workouts, or if you're looking to reduce your body fat you may want to go with a lower carbohydrate green veggie base.  The truth of it is that you can add anything you like.  I usually look at what is in my refrigerator and go with what ever needs to be used.  Just keep in mind to only make enough to last 3-4 days, as the active enzymes and nutrients in the foods tend to degrade over time.

Hearty Veggie Base

2-3 stalks celery

1 cucumber

4 cups spinach, or green of the week

3 carrots

1 beet, peeled

Add all ingredients to blender and blend well.

Green Veggie Base

2-3 stalks celery

1 cucumber

4 cups spinach, or green of the week

Add all ingredients to blender and blend well.

Fresh Almond Milk

1 cup soaked raw almonds

2 cups water  (*Use less water for thicker milk)

Soak almonds in filtered water for 8 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse well.  Add the soaked (sprouted) almonds and 2 cups of water to the blender and blend well.  Strain pulp through a nut bug or cheese cloth.  You can save the pulp in the freezer to use later in snack bars, cinnamon rolls or other recipes.

~ Variations ~

*Use Brazil or Macadamia Nuts for a soak-free milk.  With these nuts you can just blend them up with some water and whola! You have a delicious nut milk.  Brazil nuts actually make the creamiest milk.

Vanilla Almond Milk

Make Basic Fresh Almond Milk, strain and add:

1 vanilla bean, seeds scooped out

3 pitted Medjool dates (if dates are hard, soak them in water for ½ hour)

Blend well!  Shake well before using.

*Remember, there is sugar in the dates, so if you'd prefer to stay away from the sugar, you can use stevia or Truvia instead to sweeten the milk.  This is highly recommended for weight loss.

The milk will last in the refrigerator 3-5 days.

*Others options include adding cinnamon, maple syrup, or honey.

Fresh Coconut Milk

1 young coconut, water and meat

Place water and meat in blender and blend well.

*This can be used in a multitude of recipes!
